About the artwork
“Irons,” created in 2021, is a sculptural composition that explores the remarkable relationship between nature and human creativity. Consisting of two distinct yet complementary sculptures, the work draws inspiration from the recognizable silhouettes of traditional clothes irons. Through the unexpected combination of naturally shaped wood and carefully layered glass, these familiar forms are transformed into a contemporary artistic expression.
The defining elements of the composition are the irregular pieces of wood shaped by natural processes. Their rugged surfaces, deep crevices, weathered textures, and elongated, branching contours preserve the visible traces of time. Rather than concealing these imperfections, the artist embraces them as essential features of the sculptures, allowing the original character and beauty of the wood to remain at the heart of the work.
The lower sections of the sculptures are constructed from carefully arranged layers of colored glass, creating a striking geometric foundation. Alternating shades of amber, warm brown, cream, pale green, and deep charcoal form a rich yet balanced palette. The interplay between translucent and darker layers introduces subtle variations of light and depth, giving the glass an almost architectural presence.
The contrasting proportions of the two sculptures establish a compelling visual rhythm. One rises vertically, displaying a tall, almost monumental structure, while the other extends horizontally in a lower, more grounded form. Their naturally projecting wooden elements recall the familiar outlines of traditional irons, creating a playful connection between everyday objects and abstract sculpture.
A central feature of the composition is the contrast between the unpredictable shapes of the wood and the precise, parallel lines of the glass. These opposing qualities exist in remarkable harmony. The rough, aged surfaces of the natural material are complemented by the smooth, luminous character of the glass, allowing each element to emphasize the beauty of the other.
Viewed from different angles, the sculptures reveal an ever-changing arrangement of textures, colors, and shadows. Natural light enhances the warm tones and subtle transparency of the glass, while shadows settle into the cracks and recesses of the wood, emphasizing its sculptural depth. Together or individually, the two pieces offer a captivating visual experience.
“Irons” transforms the familiarity of an everyday object into a celebration of artistic imagination and material expression. Behind its playful title lies a thoughtful exploration of form, proportion, texture, and contrast. The composition reflects the individuality of nature and the creative freedom of contemporary sculpture, resulting in a distinctive artistic statement.
