About the artwork
“Fish,” created in 2019, is a distinctive contemporary sculpture that brings together the organic beauty of natural wood and the expressive possibilities of layered glass. At the heart of the composition lies an elongated, irregularly shaped piece of timber whose flowing contours and rich grain patterns evoke the silhouette of a fish moving through water. By preserving the wood's original character and introducing carefully arranged glass elements, the artist creates a harmonious relationship between two contrasting materials.
The wooden surface reveals a fascinating variety of natural textures, including deep grooves, cracks, and elongated fibers shaped by time and natural processes. Warm brown tones alternate with darker areas, giving the sculpture a rich sense of depth and individuality. One end of the wooden form extends into narrower, irregular contours, while the opposite side is complemented by the more structured geometry of layered glass. This contrast creates a dynamic yet balanced silhouette.
The sculpture's most distinctive features are its carefully arranged glass layers in shades of blue-green, muted gray, and deep black. The alternating bands introduce a subtle geometric rhythm, reminiscent of flowing water, shifting light, and the mysterious depths of an underwater environment. More translucent sections gently capture the surrounding light, while the darker layers provide visual definition and contrast.
A central element of the artwork is the dialogue between the unpredictability of nature and the precision of artistic craftsmanship. The rugged, organic wooden surface contrasts beautifully with the smoother, subtly reflective glass. As the sculpture is viewed from different angles, its textures, contours, and layered details reveal new visual relationships. The materials complement one another without losing their individual identities.
“Fish” is more than an artistic interpretation of an aquatic creature. It also reflects the relationship between nature and human creativity, suggesting ideas of movement, adaptation, and balance. The combination of wood and glass transforms a naturally shaped fragment into an expressive contemporary artwork. Created in 2019, this one-of-a-kind sculpture belongs to the Museum of Ancient Glass in Zadar, Croatia, where it forms part of the museum's collection.
