About the artwork

“Fragment,” created in 2022, is a sculptural exploration of the extraordinary relationship between natural materials and contemporary artistic expression. At its heart lies an elongated, irregular piece of weathered wood, its distinctive form complemented by carefully integrated layers of turquoise-green glass. The composition preserves the authentic character of the natural material while introducing a refined geometric structure that transforms the fragment into a unique artistic statement. The wooden surface reveals the unmistakable traces of time and natural transformation. Deep cracks, flowing grain patterns, irregular fractures, and layered sections of splintered timber create a rich landscape of textures. One end of the sculpture expands into a broader, fragmented form, while the opposite end narrows toward a more defined conclusion. These contrasting features establish a natural sense of movement and individuality, allowing the wood's original character to remain central to the artwork. The sculpture's most recognizable elements are three carefully arranged sections of narrow glass layers that wrap around the wooden body. Alternating shades of pale turquoise, blue-green, and darker tones introduce a subtle, almost musical rhythm across the surface. Rather than imposing a rigid structure upon the wood, the glass follows its irregular contours, creating a seamless relationship between the natural and the deliberately composed. The interaction between the two materials is fundamental to the sculpture's expressive power. The matte, rugged, and fractured surface of the wood stands in striking contrast to the gently reflective, precisely arranged glass layers. This dialogue between natural unpredictability and geometric order creates a compelling balance of tranquility and tension. Instead of concealing the wood's imperfections, the artist embraces them as essential elements of the sculpture's identity. The elongated, gently curved silhouette of “Fragment” conveys both stability and movement. The three glass sections divide the wooden form into a carefully balanced composition, while the exposed areas between them allow the natural textures to remain visually prominent. Viewed from different angles, the sculpture reveals new details in its fragmented edges, layered grain, and subtly undulating glass bands, offering an evolving visual experience. Light and shadow further enrich the artwork's appearance. Shadows gather within the deep recesses of the wood, emphasizing its weathered character and sculptural depth. Meanwhile, the turquoise-green glass catches the surrounding light, introducing delicate highlights and a refreshing contrast to the earthy brown tones. The combination of warm natural colors and cool green-blue accents gives the sculpture a timeless and understated elegance. The title “Fragment” reflects the essence of the artwork. A seemingly ordinary remnant of nature is transformed into an independent artistic expression, bringing together visible traces of the past and the creative vision of the present. The sculpture evokes ideas of transformation, impermanence, and renewal while celebrating the individuality of natural forms. Created in 2022, this one-of-a-kind artwork is part of the collection of a museum in Sofia, Bulgaria.
